I could use a little help getting started with "orangemesh". I'm just beginning to feel comfortable with Linux, but I don't have enough development background to setup a custom application from scratch. I have installed Ubuntu Server Edition with Xubuntu-Desktop as a start, and installed XAMPP, even though Ubuntu sets up a default LAMPP server. I'm not sure what to do next. I have the latest orangemesh release downloaded, but don't have a clue how to get it integrated. A step-by-step procedure for us neophytes sure would be nice. Most of us can follow directions if they are detailed enough.

Thanks,
Kip Confused

Yep, I saw that and felt like I knew less after I read it than I did before. There are a lot of assumptions and recommendations, but nothing that anyone with my level of experience could follow. I believe in the KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid) method. I'm not sure If anyone on this forum has ever indicated that they had a server working with "orangemesh". Maybe someone will see fit to draft a meaningful setup procedure soon.
Thanks for the recommendation though.

First, you don't have to use Linux to run OM. You can use Windows, Mac, whatever. If you're not comfortable using Linux I'd encourage you to first get something running in an OS you are more comfortable with and then try it in Linux.

If you're just starting out, you shouldn't be trying to set up a LAMP stack in Linux. That's why we recommend you use the XAMPP package, which gives you a pre-configured web server and database that can run OM. You can download XAMPP here:

If you're in Windows, there's a simple installer and GUI to start your server. It's really quite simple, and if you have trouble with this step then I'd encourage you to spend some time searching for setup guides for XAMPP, as they are plentiful and will give you more depth than I can. If you're using Ubuntu (encouraged!), there is a great step-by-step on ubuntuforums.org about setting up XAMPP:

Once you have XAMPP set up and running, open up a browser and type in "http://localhost" into the address bar. You've got it working if you see anything. To access phpMyAdmin, type "http://localhost/phpmyadmin". That will take you to the database configuration tool's page, and the install document in Orangemesh gives step-by-step instructions on what to do there.

The install document doesn't go into much detail on setting up your environment because that's a bit out of scope for OM and there are many other, more complete, guides available on doing that for the wide variety of scenarios under which someone would run OM. In any case, I hope this helps and if you continue to have problems I'd appreciate clear and specific feedback on how we can improve our setup documentation.

EDIT: I just realized that you said you already had XAMPP set up. All you have to do is copy/paste Orangemesh into the webroot folder of XAMPP (usually called "htdocs"). That folder is just in whatever directory you installed XAMPP. Then if you navigate to "http://localhost/orangemesh" you should see the main orangemesh page. There are a couple files you have to modify, which are outlined in the INSTALL doc. Again, let me know specifically where you are getting stuck so I can help you out.

Thanks for the offer. Right now the wife has me busy with Christmas preparation, but I'll get back to orange mesh in a few days, and I will need some guidance. I reinstalled Kubuntu because I didn't like the default desktop manager in Xubuntu. I'll reinstall XAMPP as soon as I have time, and then try to link it all together.

Thanks again. Smile

I also found that ubuntu server is the best OS choice for orangemesh. They have the latest versions of php in the repos unlike when i tried centos. Which caused me a headache for a while.

I like to install my own services instead of XAMPP/LAMP. I feel like too much control has been taken from me when using them Wink
