Very Happy Some may ask... why bother with the old compaqs and dells?

I would say cost and reliability!!

In some economies of the world as Julio pointed out on another forum... import duty of 60% plus local taxes can render huge costs for community wireless groups. Units can suddenly double in cost

If we can recycle reliable old intel pc's certainly for gateways it is a bonus. This can get community networks up and running quickly and eficiently.

Ideally we want the Batman/Robin to work and mesh cross platforms.

The reliability issue also needs considering. Our compaqs are still running and running... several years later. I however have some meraki units which are very iffy and only a few months old. They can run very hot! Its not good planning if we have to swap out these new units every few months....

Do others agree with this thinking?

Best Wishes,

Ian

Absolutely agree there Ian!

I would only add that x86 gives the opportunity to attach some serious storage capacity via Hard Disk, which can be useful for local content serving for example.

I also found that it is great for setting up more powerful master gateways. In case you want to host more services or have a need to capture VoIP and data traffic for CALEA requirements. In the US anyways.

We're interested in Robin on x86 for the ability to use high powered radios, and to have more flexibility. The WRT/fon/Meraki's are typically fairly low power single radio boxes. With x86 and a PCI to MiniPCI adapter or 3, you can fill the box with 200-600mW cards, each with a directional antenna pointing in a different direction.

Agree that using legacy x86 boxes is very useful: ability to add loads of storage, have memory and processor resources to run extra services, avahi, webDAV for e.g. ... also a ROBIX86 would potentially mean that any atheros x86 laptop that clients to a ROBIN network could be a temporary repeater.

cheers

i like that idea of temporary having a laptop turn into a repeater that would be awsome
