I've been happily throttling bandwidth on the OM dashboard, but now want to move to a captive portal solution. I want to set speed limits per user.

CoovaOM speed control doesn't seem to work. I have tried all variations of kiloBytes, and Bytes per second. My goal is to limit to 1500 kilobits (187 kilobytes)/second. However for the user accounts I've created, the speed goes well over 3mb/s. Interestingly, it does seem to work if I set the speed limit < 1mb/s .
Anyone able to effectively control the speed with CoovaOM?

I just also had this experience while testing WifiRush v 4.7.3 (the free one for open-mesh users). I posted on their board and they said there are bandwidth control problems until v 4.8.1 (the newest).

Could it be that there is something broken in the firmware that these captive portal solutions aren't able to control speed limits settings?

Test hardware is accton MR3201a. Firmware is r2693-26/CO.
network name is mesquitotest

Just tested a user set to 180 KB/s and it seems to throttle about right.
User set to 185 MB/s is speed testing at over 2.5mb/s

still not working correctly.
185 KiloBytes should be 1500 kilobits/s or about 1.4 megabits/second.

Using speedtest.net or speakeasy.net/speedtest the result is 2.4 megabit.

Is this a reliable way to test that coova is throttling? I don't know how/where in the software Coova is able to control a user session and whether that speed control can be very precise.

Sure, it's a test. I tested 3x awhile ago, but went back to 2963.
I'd be happy to test 3x again and let you know.

@ispyisail. I have updated the node to 3448 and still getting 2.5 mbit/s. On my 185 KB account.
Any thoughts on where to look for the problem?

did you "authirized user device" ?
I mean, did you add your user do whitelist?
if yes than there are not asked to enter passoword ...
if no, then maybe those users did run out your policy ...

Yes, users are in "user list" and have "User Access Policies" and is added to "vecino" policies:

Name Vecino
Access Time Unlimited
Access Window Unlimited
Recurring Access Window false
Max Download Data Unlimited
Max Upload Data Unlimited
Max Total Data Unlimited
Max Download Rate Unlimited
Max Upload Rate 3 Kilo-Bytes
Max Concurrent Sessions Unlimited
Max Total Logins Unlimited
Redirect URL http://vecinosdefrai.com/foro/

But Max Upload Rate 3 Kilo-Bytes dont work!

Last Result:
Download Speed: 4774 kbps (596.8 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 109 kbps (13.6 KB/sec transfer rate)

In testing here the initial download speed always spikes, but then comes down to what it's suppose to be throttled to.

Not to be picky, but is anyone sure about CoovaOM's notation of the speed and their calculation of a Kilo-Byte?
Coova uses notation "Kilo-Bytes" and "Mega-Bytes" as measurements.
In my testing, I concluded:
150 Kilo-Bytes resulted in a speed test of 1500 kilobits/s

By standard calculation, I should be setting it at 187.5 kilobytes to limit speed to 1500 kilobits/s.

Also, the spike at the beginning of a speed-test is raising the overall average speed by a little bit. But, that might explain why my 187 Kilo-Byte account was getting an average speed over 2mbit/s. In fact, most of the time, the needle was around 1.9 megabit but with the spike at the beginning the overall result was higher.

Maybe in Coova, 1 byte = 10 bits?
