I would like to propose that everyone who uses ROBIN mesh in a professional context begin to donate $1 per month to Antonio for each radio that is deployed. If Antonio later decides to incorporate a software company, I'd propose that these funds be dedicated to the resulting entity.

I'll be the first to make a commitment. CWC will commit to a payment of $553 in November and will continue to pay $1 / Radio / Month for each deployed radio as long as Antonio continues to develop the software.

Why? - It takes time and effort to support this initiative. If you are building a business on this software, it make sense to ensure that the resources are there to continue its development. Nothing would [CENSORED] more than deploying this software load only to have the key developer quit due to lack of resources.

My organization is in the process of changing our existing mesh infrastructure over to Open-Mesh. With over 550 mesh nodes online and another 1,000 in the pipeline, we are very interested in a software load that is:

1. Stable and Reliable
2. Stable and Reliable (this is not a typo)
3. Capable of Significant Throughput
4. Flexible

With this in mind we are committed to making this project a success by helping both technologically and financially.

I'll leave it to Antonio to post his payment information, or (quite possibly) to rebuke me and say "bad idea". Either way, I am on the record. I'd encourage other folks with commercial networks to do the same.

In principal I am in agreement. I personally have been thinking of this as well. My thoughts were along the lines of a royalty of active radios. Maybe .5% to 1% per ROBIN radio or gateway for the ROBIN radios. I am not currently receiving any revenue from these radios; however, I am in the planning and engineering phase.

In principle, i am very much in agreement with this. I have about 100 nodes installed.

I intend on following oojoshua's lead beginning in December with a small monthly donation of $100. As my installations grow, as will my donation.

I encourage others using ROBIN in for-profit networks to strongly consider a similar voluntary donation.

Antonio, any objections?

I appreciate that Antonio is not the only contributor to this project, but he definitely is the primary author of ROBIN. If Antonio chooses to share a portion of these donations with other contributors, I trust him to do so at his own discretion.

I appreciate very much this initiative, besides being an income is also an incentive to do more and better.
Thank you all, really!

Antonio

I think this is a great idea and will be doing the same. I think it should stay open source however and not ever go to a license key. That way people can play with it and I think Antonio will make more $ with the donation of $1.00 per node because once people get 20 plus nodes they will be making money so they can afford to pay the 1.00/month per node.

Today I was just once again browsing the Forum as I realised that it is not fair that we want to start using the RobinMesh/Open-mesh commercially on our network while Antonio and others are devoting lots of their time in the project without recieving anything for that.

I was surprised to find this post/subject and even positively surprised by the intiative of oojoshua. Unfortunately that feeling did not remain that long as I found out that the Paypal account of Antonio is not exploding (yet) and only oojoshua is supporting!

We are just a small company who decided to replace their old point-to-point Senao 802.11b network by a mainly Bullet-based Ubiquiti mesh network in Zandvoort / Amsterdam Beach (Netherlands). In about a month time we will be running about 40 nodes and our Polish Ubiquiti supllier will be more than happy with all the hardware he sold us!

We never earned a lot of money with our network and as the beachseason is almost over here for the year 2010 we will not make huge profits this year either. However the mesh network will also have a considerable role in supporting the remote webcams at

Even when we will make only a moderate profit (I hope) in the years to come I think that it should be no more than normal for a company to support this great project by every means it can.

So I am not promising golden mountains but at least once a year we will start making up the bill and donate the best we can to this fantastic project.

I hope that many commercial users will follow our example.

Hi,

We have been experimenting with ROBIN driven devices for couple of months now. We only have about a dozen of radios in the field at the moment and aren't making any money yet, but we very much appreciate all the work which you have put into this firmware.

We are more then happy to send 50$ and hopefully some more when we start doing any business.

We have spent last few months developing a system for ad insertion, working as transparent proxy. We are now in the process of building a website which will be available at

but we are starting to make a few dollars per month and I'll try to funnel some money your way.

I think this is a great idea; alas, $1 per radio per month is much more than we can afford. But I think I'd rather contribute something regularly (that fits into our business model - it won't really help anyone if we go broke).
