I'm just beginning to feel comfortable with embedded systems, but I don't quite understand how an old i86 platform can act as a mesh AP. Can most compatible PCI wireless adapters work as an AP, or does it take special radio hardware? I have several old desktops I'd like to find a use for, if I could just understand the configuration requirements. Any documentation links for this application?

Thanks,
Kip

The biggest hurdle (I think) is getting BATMAN to talk to your mesh. As long as your PC has WiFi capabilities and you're able to make BATMAN communicate properly, getting ROBIN to cooperate should be downhill.

Theoretically, any WiFi enabled system should work as a mesh node. I believe Dashboard would have to be revamped in order to support x86 config pushes, but that too would probably be a piece of cake for the right person.

I don't know of any X86 mesh documentation that I can point you to -- perhaps someone else has something they can post?

All you need to add is a radio card and you are away! Some are beter than others. In the bios need to set in network mode and to autoboot when powers up, Compaqs very easy to fix! some need jumpers re set.

Can change the hard drive to a silent IDE flash

So can be virtually silent and reliable .... though a little bulky.

For last few years virtually all our nodes both gateways and repeaters have been by using Compaq p2's or P3's

With advent of merakis we thought great!!!! But the reliablity and price does worry us. If you have stocks of old pc's... just a few atheros cards can get you up and running.

But there are issues with the current Batman/robin build for x86's. This we hope can be addressed so we can mesh cross platform and who knows maybe even with other non atheros chipsets..... now thats another story.... but wouldnt it be good to be able to mesh atheros with broadcom....
