Hi,

I am new to the idea of using robin in mesh networking. Thus, I have several questions to ask:
1. If we flash in the robin firmware into bullet2, can I still flash back the original firmware?
2. If we have a set up in mesh networking, can we use other firmwares to connect to it? eg. ubiquiti original firmware.
3. If we are setting up a mesh networking, must all the bullet2 taking part in the mesh be equipped with the robin firmware?

Lastly, are there any website that I can read up more on the firmware?

Thanks.

1. Is it possible to create internet-less mesh network? I observed from the read up on open-mesh.com(dashbboard), it seems I require internet access.

2. Do we need to have the internet to configure the setting first before the rest can be done offline.

3. What are the firmware which i should use to flash into the bullet 2?

4. What are the procedure to set up a mesh netywoeking?( i mean for the firmware side). And is there any documentation which i can refer or read up from?

Thanks.

Different routers have different firmware install methods and images

Some routers will accept more that one method / image

Some people find some methods better than others

ROBIN-mesh is designed for client internet access and to be run from a dashboard.................But with some work it may be possible to run without a dashboard and no internet.

Without an internet connection the node will keep rebooting so you only have a very small windows to make changes (5 10 minutes, not sure of exact time).

To be honest the easiest way to set up your node is to connect to a dashboard then make changes then disconnect from the dashboard if required.

May I know how to install the firmware into the router? I read up on robin wiki on the flashing procedure but when I came across the site to download the firmware, they mentioned something about open-mesh-flash to install the firmware into the router.

Furthermore, I came across one of the forum that there are actually two version of openwrt-atheros-ubnt2-squashfs.bin. But only one is operational. So may I know which is the one that is workable? I found out two of different file size, 2.7MB and 2.3MB.

Tnanks...

As an alternative to the excellent method that ispyisail just suggested, you can use the open-mesh-flash.exe utility here:

It has the r2695 stable version of ROBIN embedded within it so you don't need to worry about a .bin file. And you also wouldn't need to change your IP address to 192.168.1.x
If you are using a Windows machine you would need to first have downloaded and installed winpcap:

There are good instructions for using open-mesh-flash.exe here:

And there's a video here that may be helpful:

But be careful that unlike the ubiquiti device used in the video if you're flashing the bullet2 you'll need to power it up and push the reset button for about seven seconds BEFORE you run open-mesh-flash.exe
That's explained at the awmn.gr site above.

Just flashing a bullet2 now, this is what I saw at the command prompt:
C:\>open-mesh-flash 1
Waiting for device to run auto-detection.
Make sure the device is connected directly!
Ubiquiti device detected - using TFTP client to flash
Trying to connect to TFTP server on the device ..
Connection to TFTP server established - uploading 2883584 bytes of data ...
Image successfully transmitted.
Please give the device a couple of minutes to install the new image into the flash.

It was an additional few minutes before a "mesh" ssid that appeared changed to "open-mesh" and I rebooted it once in between, perhaps unnecessarily.

If you do use the method ispyisail suggested it may be helpful to know that there's already an adequate tftp client built into some OSs including Windows XP Professional:

My personal favorite is to upgrade directly from AirOS to ROBIN via the AirOS firmware upgrade.
