Looks like cloudtrax has now dumped CoovaOM support, for networks I have coovaom already setup on it still has the one click login and everything but those networks I don't have coovaom on there is no longer an option in the pull down menu for coovaom use

Coova has decided to discontinue this server and asked us not to allow any new networks on it. I would suggest contacting Coova for more information. We are working hard to come up with an alternative. If you can let me know how you use it, that would be helpful.

Have now emailed Coova to get their word on it

From Coova Support
Quote:
Yes, unfortunately, we have to discontinue the service. We are
suggesting that networks migrate to the CloudTrax offering or their own
cloud based or in-house CoovaRADIUS solution.

Thanks

It would have been nice if all parties involved could have made a public statement about coovaOM

Enough with the surprises!
All of a sudden CoovaOM has issues with system slow downs.
Mike moves servers, then CoovaOM shuts down completely.

I know that they were/are free, but, I wish I had some warning.

I would have liked to pull my reports for my networks before they shut down.

CoovaOM is still able to be logged into, etc. Nothing has changed in that regard.

I got off of CoovaOM when they were having speed and other issues on this thread:

I switched to the cloudtrax splash page with vouchers. BTW, it's working very well, great speed compared to CoovaOM.

Last night, I went to switch back to my CoovaOM account, to pull the monthly usage details, and it no longer exists. Just like @lemos says.

It appears that if you are current user of CoovaOM, you still have your account. If you switch to another captive portal, your account is gone. You don't have the CoovaOM choice.

Not that it matters, and I'm not going to pursue it any further, but a little pre-warning would have been nice.

I believe it was meant to be, however, coovas interests were purely commercial (the same reason they took down the service).

open-source doesn't mean free (no pay), do you think open-source coders and their family eat the code or the glory?

It's hard to say, but it's a fact, open-source doesn't pay any bills.
Yes, if you're lucky you get some donations for a while but finally also that stops.
That's why I always encourage people that if you're serious with your business, you simply CAN'T rely on third parties.
Setup your own radius environment, and if you like coovaradius David will be happy to help you set it up.
Ok, it will cost you some money, but you will have your own infrastructure without the need of relying on someone else's services.

Also for firmwares (robin,coovaAP,...), it's all free and that's great, but again, it doesn't pay any bills.
I think a small license fee (1 per device) for each downloaded firmware wouldn't be that bad and it would also keep the dev happy and motivated.
I think that's the way robin, coovaAP and maybe others should go to keep themselves alive.
Many people probably won't like what i'm saying here, but it's reality guys Wink

Although I understand the problems of providing a free service, some sort or warning or announcement that the Cloudtrax dashboard would be actively disallowing CoovaOM from its users would have been really helpful.

Instead, I find this out out since I switched back to the nodog portal, having been compelled to do since om.coova.net was down, and now I can't switch back 5 hrs later.

Couldn't agree more and quite willing to pay reasonable rates for firmware licenses and supporting applications such as dashboards etc but only once they are considered final release and actually fully exploit the features, function and interoperability of the system as a whole.

My preference is have it all In-House...the only service I rely on that is not located on my servers in terms of the mesh networks is Open-Mesh Dashboard which I would dearly love to not rely on for the longer term as they've offered no opportunity to purchase an in-house license.

Don't like "cloud" computing or putting the reliability and accessibility of my networks and services in the hands of others.. rather spend my capital for internal functionality to assure as close to 100% up-time as technologically achievable and feasible.

Too much at stake once customers are paying for services.

My 2 cents added to yours!.. makes 4 cents worth! Smile

Mike

I would agree with the notion of having everything in house, and I had indeed been looking into options for a replacement for CoovaOM, whether with paid Coova services or (ideally) completely in-house Coova-like services. Certainly, I would have liked to made more progress on that, before this outage occurred.

My concern is more with the current arrangement of booting Cloudtrax users off CoovaOM without warning. This is actually the first time I saw this URL, since it is apparently not linked to on

How many current OM mesh operators, some of whom could have become paying Coova customers given forehand notice, are now crippled from developing their subscriber base? Indeed, I'm expecting to lose would-be paying subscribers because of this outage.

I just paid for another year's worth of paid access on CoovaOM. Now I can't log back in to even apply for a refund. What should I do to get my money back, and what hosting service for paid access should I use now?

I have the WiFiRush Enterprise server which works ok for me - but they also do a hosted service. The new 5.0 Beta has some great features in.

Sue? I kid, just get in touch with David Bird on LinkedIn or something similar.
Try Google to find some others...

From what I can tell, everyone's existing data on CoovaOM is apparently still there. I saw a couple of my nodes somehow start up coovachilli (even tho I had tried to switch to nodog), and correctly process authentication thru om.coova.net.

I understand David has a pretty uphill battle, especially considering his remark that in the last 18+ months more than 4,300 networks have registered for CoovaOM/NET services. I really wish this enormous influx of new OM users could be translated into more adoption (and even mfg and vendor support) of mesh wifi.

The specific snafu is that the Cloudtrax.com maintainers chose to recently patch their dashboard (within the past month?) so that users switching from CoovaOM for whatever reason could not switch back, and this is the snafu that got me.

Besides contacting David @ Coova, looks like also need to contact Cloudtrax support at
