I first posted this in the OM1P thread, but I guess it should really go in the absolute beginner index...
I'm relatively new to mesh based networks and deploying them, so my lessons learned file is still very small...
I'm a bit worried/unsure about my approach as I need to cover a relatively small outdoor area. Lucky me there are no real obstacles (trees, buildings, ...) and the environments are flat campgrounds.Basically they are two rectangles 328'x164' (100mx50m) and 393'x98'(120mx30m), there's no existing 2.4Ghz network nearby.
The internet connection is coming in at a corner of the rectangle, so I will be putting a gateway at the corner and at a distance of about 190'(60m) towards the middle of the rectangle a second OM1P as router, both would be at a +- height of 13'(4m) and the 7dBi antenna's, I did foresee 4 routers per campgrounds in case there are any black spots.
Again, I have no hands-on experience, so maybe 4 OM1P's is plain overkill, any comment is welcome!
I have done some outdoor testing with the OM1P as a gateway using the 7dBi antenna and an antenna height of just about 10'(3m) to get a feel of the range it would provide.
At about 400'(+-100m) & LoS I still could get a good signal (no real dBm measurement tool
) but with just a mobile phone as wifi client and the throughput remained exceptionally good, I didn't test the standard antenna tho.
So, (I think) I can be somewhat confident that covering the flat rectangles with 2 to 4 OM1P's per campground will be possible, with the 7dBi antenna's & at 13'(4m) height, the fresnel zone between gateway/router should therefore be clean.
But, then again, I'm just going on theoretical assumptions here, any comments with real-life experience are welcome on the coverage approach
The internet connection however is just a consumer ADSL line, 5Mb/down & 512Kb/up.
The idea is to throttle the max-speed-per-user down to just enough throughput (2 or 3 times good 'ol ISDN speed maybe) to allow somewhat acceptable/comfortable surf & email net functionality but high throughput such streaming media etc isn't required at all.
At peaks moments there could be a potential of 30-50 wifi clients present at 1 location, but I don't have an idea how many wifi clients a OM1P can support before it starts degrading the wifi service for everyone.
Probably we'll start with a low throttle and increase the bandwidth per client as we get some statistics on throughput after some use.
Also, I'm not sure if I should flash the OM1P with Robin, as there is really no functionality required and I think deploying the OM1P's as-is will be more then enough fun for me to start with, the build-in splash page & voucher approach is more then sufficient as the internet connection is basically open to everyone with a valid code, no need for billing etc.
