Hi everyone,

It's been a while since I've posted, but after doing some network upgrades I'm looking how to improve our small four node network. After reading through the stuff at open-mesh and here it seems there are now two divergent firmware paths. The one here where it all started and seems to be around r37xx. The open-mesh site now seems to have there own version which is called firmware-ng.

From reading there faq there's one very appealing feature that I would like to setup and that's bridging the private network to our main lan and allowing our router to hand out IPs. This would greatly increase the functionality of our network for internal use yet keeping the public side open for general internet use.

So, any pointers if this can be done w/ the current RobinMesh firmware and/or any opinions on the firmware being offered by open-mesh? I would prefer to stick with this project since I'm familiar with the firmware and the people behind it.

Our current network has two gateway nodes and two repeater nodes, one on each gateway running a mix of r3527 and r2693 with no major issues with up time or speeds. They are all MR3201A devices.

Thanks,

Kage_

My understanding is that bridging in the robin firmware for the past few versions has not worked and probably will not be fixed any time soon.

What was the last version it worked in and was it stable to use on a production system?

I can't say from knowledge but I think it was just prior to the r37xx releases.

I know it's not a common firmware here, but have you tried the ng firmware?

If you upgrade to r3842 you will be very impressed, not like the bad old days Smile

Stable as fast

There are a couple of small bugs but not on the main features

One of the main features I'm looking for is the transparent bridging. We just expanded our network and my users in our other building need access to run applications from our server on our main lan, but the Natting is causing issues with it.

Thanks for the welcome back... You know a product is good when it just runs with very little intervention on my part and yes you are right the old firmware versions had major issues....

unfortunately with ROBIN "transparent bridging" only works on gateways

I would suggest you would need to test this feature before deployment

That wouldn't been an issue. I have two of the four hardwired and I hardware the 3rd in our remote building. I was playing w/ the open source robin dash, but I don't see the option to enable it.

That is because I had number of issues with it and also got confused as to which options to send from the dashboard to the nodes. I will most certainly try this out today and enable it, depending on how well it works

To test using cloudtrax dashboard

* Disable SSID 2

* Run SSH commands

Code:
uci set management.enable.transparent_bridge=1
uci commit management
reboot

Note transparent bridge only works on SSID 2

Making a wireless connection

WPA key to associate with the transparent bridge is in the format <rootpwd>@<gateway-name>, ie if your rootpwd is 0p3nm35h and the gateway name is gateway-33 then:
0p3nm35h@gateway-33

Two things:
If transparent bridge only runs on SSID #2 then how could you test it by disabling SSID #2?
Why is the password in that format? Its not necessary in any other mode.

I agree that doesn't make sense. Also why would you have to use the root password and the node name instead of the normal WPA key.
