Hi I brought a few open-mesh.com routers a year or so ago. One of the reasons I got them is because they were open-source.

It now seems that open-mesh is closed source. Is this correct?

"Please note: it is not currently possible to build the full NG firmware as it uses some closed-source components that cannot be made freely available. It is still possible to build a mesh network (by using OpenWrt with B.A.T.M.A.N.), but it is not possible to create firmware that will integrate with the full Open-Mesh environment."

Is there anyone selling pre-flashed, devices running open-source Robin firmware?

The OM1P's sold by Open-Mesh.com are still (as of about a month ago) sold pre-flashed with robin.

I don't believe they will ever come pre-flashed with NG.

At the end of the day its up to Mike really. He wants people to have the "worst" experience with the OM1P so they will pay more for an OM2P and use NG.

It's more likely that they were flashed at the factory and Mike isn't going to sit around for weeks and manually flash all his OM1P stock Razz

That is a debatable statement considering that he is constantly ordering in new OM1P's every few months, by the thousands.

Or considering the vast amount of OM1P's out there running Robin firmware, placing NG on them would lead more to mass confusion.

So just to be clear

NG is a fork of the opensource project Robin?

Can you do that? Take a opensource project and develop a closed source project out of it? I thought the GPL guarded against that..

No,

It's completely different. Robin uses OSLR, while NG uses BATMAN

What is this NG based on?

Presumably still Open Wrt? Batman is opensource.. I fail to see how they can create closed source software from GPL'd code and not be in breach of the GPL.

Meraki also uses OpenWrt (to my knowledge). Open-Mesh with their NG and treading murky waters with what they are doing. I do not believe they are in violation of their obligations under the GPL but its very close.

Indeed

Seems ironic that open-mesh was born out of dissatisfaction with Meraki and their closed source model. It seems open-mesh is now treading the same path.

Is it time for
